Jan 18th Guitar Power Chords

This lesson teaches you:
  • What is a Power Chord?
  • How to make a Power Chord

Notes:
  • Power chords can be played with 2 fingers and only 2 notes
  • Invented because of electric guitars
    • Normal chords are usually too thick to play on a overdriven/distorted guitar
      • Overdrive/Distortion make the frequency of each note very thick, so playing notes that are close to each other bump into one another the wrong way (sounds nasty).
  • The fingering (chord chart position) for power chords is the same for any note on the 3rd-6th strings, and 1st-2nd string.
    • If your fingers are the same distance apart (2frets), you can play a power chord anywhere on the guitar except the second string.
Assignment:
  • Memorize Chords: B5, D5, E5, and G5 (on handout below)
  • Memorize how to create power chords (steps on handout below)
  • Practice 5 minutes per day
  • Start Learning Iron Man (on handout below)
